Quarkus Systemd Notify Extension

Introduction

This extension is used to notify Linux service manager (systemd) about start-up completion and other service status changes.

Usage

To use the extension, add the dependency to the target project:

<dependency>
    <groupId>io.quarkiverse.systemd.notify</groupId>
    <artifactId>quarkus-systemd-notify</artifactId>
    <version>1.1.0</version>
</dependency>

and configure the service unit file with the following minimum configurations:

[Service]
Type=notify
NotifyAccess=all

The application notifies systemd once it started (READY=1, after the StartupEvent observers), and when it begins to stop (STOPPING=1, before the ShutdownEvent observers): systemctl start returns once the application started, and the service is deactivating while the application stops.

Unit settings

The extension sends the notifications with the systemd-notify command of systemd, a child process of the application. Type=notify services only accept the notifications of their main process by default (NotifyAccess=main), so the service needs one of these settings:

  • NotifyAccess=all (recommended): systemd accepts the notifications of every process of the service. It grants no privilege. With systemd 246 and later, systemd-notify waits until systemd processed each notification, as systemd needs to attribute it to the service; with older versions, a notification may be lost.

  • A service run as root (without User=): systemd-notify then sends the notifications on behalf of the application.

  • AmbientCapabilities=CAP_SYS_ADMIN: the same for a service run as another user, but this capability gives the application almost the privileges of root.

NotifyAccess=exec is not enough: systemd-notify is not started by an ExecStart= command line. Without one of these settings, systemd logs Got notification message from PID …, but reception only permitted for main PID …, and the service fails to start once TimeoutStartSec= elapsed.

Systemd Service Example

Assuming quarkus-run.jar is located at /opt/quarkus-app/quarkus-run.jar:

  • Create a unit configuration file at /etc/systemd/system/quarkus.service:

[Unit]
Description=Quarkus Server
After=network.target
Wants=network.target

[Service]
Type=notify
NotifyAccess=all
ExecStart=/bin/java -jar /opt/quarkus-app/quarkus-run.jar
SuccessExitStatus=0 143

[Install]
WantedBy=multi-user.target
  • Enable the service (this will make it to run at system start-up as well):

sudo systemctl enable quarkus
  • Start/Stop/Restart the service:

sudo systemctl start quarkus
sudo systemctl stop quarkus
sudo systemctl restart quarkus
  • Check status of the service:

sudo systemctl status quarkus
